I am pleased to report that noted Author and Consultant, Allison Zmuda,
will offer at workshop on January 19, 2010, for library media
specialists in the Putnam-Westchester region. The workshop will be held
at Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Many of
you are familiar with Ms. Zmuda for her work with Violet Harada that
resulted in the publication, Librarians As Learning Specialists: Meeting
the Learning Imperative for the 21st Century.
School library media specialists are deeply involved in teaching and
curriculum design in schools. Zmuda sees the teacher/librarian as a
learning specialist essential to the teaching and learning process in
multiple ways. Teacher/librarians create inquiry-based environments and
the LMS in the current school setting is a change agent whose role
should be viewed in the mainstream of school improvement.
The term "Learning Specialist" may be viewed by library media
specialists with suspicion. However, in other states, "Learning
Specialists" are being added to schools with singular specializations
that are already part of the collaborative environment offered in the
LMC Program by the library media specialist/teacher. The library media
specialist in our schools is a curriculum leader who integrates
technology, enriches student learning opportunities for all abilities
and learning styles and is first and foremost a teacher. Please review
the information on the attached flyer and if you are interested please
register soon using "My Learning Plan" as seating will be limited. I
have also attached an article co-authored by Allison Zmuda and I suggest
that you review this for more clarification.
This workshop is paid in part through an LSTA Grant awarded to SLSA
(School Library System Association). This is the only date that the

From Library To Learning Commons.Ny.Slideshare Middle/ Secondary Library Network Meeting- November 10, 2009-Posted by John Monahan I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that our next Middle/Secondary Library Network Meeting is still scheduled for Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at BOCES. I am looking forward to seeing you and hearing you share information about the first two months of the school year.
In addition to the information that I must share with you from the State Education Department, I have attached a draft copy of the newly revised State Education Department School Library Media Program Evaluation. This document will eventually be released as a tool for evaluating school library media programs in NY State. In the meantime, the NY State Education Department has asked for input from library media specialists. I would like you to look at this program evaluation and be prepared to briefly share any thoughts you may have about the Evaluation at the Library Network Meeting.
In addition to the review of the Library Media Program Evaluation, attending library media specialists are invited to enrich our Roundtable discussion by:
·Identifying a great new book or website from the first months of 2009-2010 ·Reporting highlights from the AASL Conference in Charlotte, NC - Attendees ·Discussing plans, sharing ideas and identifying strategies of how to promote your library program to the Learning Community ·Sharing how you as School LMS and your LMC Program supports and engages the Social Studies Program in your school.
